Gold Filled Jewelry: the quick + dirty

Gold Fill is made of a thick, solid layer of gold, bonded together with copper or sterling silver.   The key words here are thick + bonded.

Gold plated, on the other hand, is almost entirely copper or nickel, with a very thin layer of gold painted overtop.  No bonding.  

You may have experienced gold plated products where the gold rubs off?
